THOUGHTS IN THE NIGHT
(In the Spirit of Caliber)

Just
a little reverie, a
brief return to days
gone by.

For some reason,
a dimly
remembered
face
comes back
through
the hazy years.

A
young
Green Beret
grew tired of
hanging around
camp
playing Liar’s
Dice with us
‘Zoomies’

He volunteered
to go on patrol,
just to
“earn his pay.”

They identified
his
body
by some
of the things
he’d carried.

The misty face
I see is still smiling,
just as it was

when he strolled
jauntily away
toward
Cambodia,

and his

last

payday.
