THE FIRST, LAST, (AND ONLY) LIBERAL G.I.

It sounds remarkable, but can it truly be that the only Liberal who ever served in the military was me? Those other guys must have been pulling my leg when they claimed to be libs. Even my own sibs! Guess they just didn’t want me to feel too lonely should I discover that I was the one and only card-carrying Liberal who ever learned to salute. Well, shoot… not with a gun, I mean, I wouldn’t want to be a galoot about it or run around waving flags and stuff. I always thought just being there and doing my job was enough. Sort of ticks me off though, that my brothers put me on for all those years. Hiding their Conservative views for fear I might’ve begun to nag if they’d wrapped themselves in the Flag and started to pontificate. Rather makes me feel like an ingrate for not being aware of such extreme caring. Oh, how they must have longed to be wearing the Red, White, and Blue tastefully draped about their shoulders! But, being older, I guess they got used to catering to “The Brat”… we can blame Mama for that… “Look out for your little brother,” she’d say, and they’d start to mumble, but not loud enough for her to hear them grumble. It’s truly strange to discover the sacrifices of my brothers, and the reason there was never another. (Liberal in the military, that is.) And I only made it because my brothers were afraid of our dear, sweet old Mother!
