Thurman P. Woodfork: Life’s a Bitch

IWVPA Double Tap Award for War Poetry: November 20, 2009
Awarded: November 20, 2009
Sweaty, smelly, and thoroughly pissed,
full of anger and fear nobody can quell;
how on earth did it come to this?
I got a few things I’d like to tell…

But who the hell can I tell them to?
The only ones I would pick
are right here with me in this zoo,
clutching the stinky end of the stick.

None of the brass really cares…
They’re busy making plans and speeches,
putting in for medals and putting on airs
while I cope with Charlie and leeches.

“War is Hell” and “Life’s a Bitch”,
some folks declare with a sigh;
I wish they were with me in this ditch;
I’d teach the bastards to cry.

You might say I’m down in the dumps,
‘cause most definitely gone is the thrill,
and now I’m heading out to hump
my ass up another lousy hill.

Author’s Note: This is what I thought might be going through this young man’s mind when I saw this picture. I’d like to know what thoughts it stirs in others. This young man does not look like he’s in the mood for idle chit-chat. Incidentally, he’s identified as Private First Class Russell R. Widdifield, 3rd Platoon, Company M, 3rd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment.
