Ian G. Winstanley
Ian Winstanley is a retired teacher (science, not history!) who now spends most of his time researching and writing about mining history. His interest stems from the memories of his maternal grand father who was born in Haydock, Lancashire about 1880 and spent his working life in the Haydock collieries before retiring in December 1946, just before the nationalization of the industry. Ian spent much time in his formative years with his grandfather and was enthralled by his stories.
Although his main interest and work is now in mining history Ian has a great interest in WW1. This interest stems from his grandfather who served from 1914-18 as a gunner on the Western front and survived to spend all his working days down the pit.
