THE HAUNTING EYES OF HUNGER

The shadow of hunger and the wee eyes of want:
Count ribs on the bodies-bone thin and face gaunt.
And we in the West know it but what do we do –
We switch the TV channel – isn’t that true?

Have you ever been to the Kibera Slum City
Where children are hungry that is such a pity?
A pandemic is raging, it’s HIV and AIDS –
You drive past to the Park and that is all a rage.

You see starving children on a page in a book
And you flip the page quick without a long look
Because the shadow of hunger is hard to look at;
You see the child’s eyes, what to do about that?

Write Oprah Winfrey, Bill Gates, Music’s Elton John.
Maybe ask U2 or Paul McCartney to continue on.
Keep helping aids orphans and help feed the poor
And then ask yourself, “Can I do a bit more?”

Author’s Note: We are commencing a feed the hungry programme for a group of single Moms and their children – they are currently residents of Kibera. We plan to move them out and start an agricultural training programme. Those of you who don’t know-Kibera is bigger and worse than the Calcutta Slum – open sewers – flies – puss etc…………
