THE SENNELAGER STINK

The deep pans of sewage filled the fields
where methane gas was captured
and the Canadian Army trained nearby
to the stink of German shit, enraptured!

We put up our tents in any event
downwind of the stinking large cans
QOR latrines, more pleasant it seems
were dug into the heath hardpan

At Halto they had the twenty-one holers
where the Brigade sat up on the throne
and the troops stood up because of rat nips
wax paper tore bums, it is known

So that is the scoop of the poop of our youth
as we sat in the large mean latrines
and now we are home it’s the individual throne
keeping bleeding piles germfree and clean!

Author’s Note: The rumour was that a soldier had his balls nipped by a rat, so that 4,999 lads out of the 5,000 men in the 4th Canadian Infantry Brigade Group with the British Army on the Rhine stood up on the cement latrine stalls outside the thousands of half-shelter pup tents at Halto. Wax toilet paper was British Army on the Rhine General Issue – most unpleasant indeed!
