John-Ward Leighton
John-Ward Leighton
John wrote poetry and short stories deep into the night
It was difficult because of the latrine’s dam poor light
Poems and short stories in secret he’d write
In the daylight he trained as a soldier to fight!

John’s words are a treasure – they are a wonderful find
Of the days of our youth – they are a constant remind
That we served our Country our Corps and our Queen
In BDs and Tee Dubs on huge parades we were seen!

We crawled through German mud then we went to the Dam
Or Copie for the girls or to Spain’s Majorca Island
We all did our time with John at night writing rhyme
And it’s now a pleasant reminder, a walk backward in time!
