“Saint Michael the Archangel – defend us in the day of battle.”
This prayer was heard above the machine gun rattle
Number 1 Canadian Para soldiers floated through the air
to the sound of the guns and the whisper of prayer

Our old airborne padre he told this to us
As we loaded our ‘chutes and then mounted the bus
He passed out the medals to each soldier there
Whilst saying again the Saint Michael’s prayer

My medal still hangs on my dog tags, today
And at night before bed when I silently pray
I remember the days of camouflage war paint
And remember St Michael our own Patron Saint!

God Bless all of those who hurtle forth into the blue
God Bless all of our wounded and our dying too
God Bless the young troopers who are serving to-day
The men of Saint Michael – Airborne all the way!

Saint Michael: Patron Saint of Paratroopers
St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle: be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray. And do you, O prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, cast into Hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.
