QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT

Peter Casserly: Trench Warfare Soldier 1914-1918, European Western Front
Peter Casserly, Australia’s oldest First World War Veteran,
who survived the bloody battles on the Western Front,
died Friday June 24, 2005
Peter Casserly and his mates
ought on the western front
bullets, bayonets and gas,
they suffered the Boche brunt
each ancient vet, lest we forget!
They suffered trench foot, lice, rats and boils
now most have left this mortal coil

Peter Casserly, is an ancient Oz vet,
lest we forget, less we forget
he passed away at a 107 –
being born in 1897
many years have passed from the WW1 scene
of those blood drenched battles as a lad of 16

Oz lost a good one yesterday
Auz’s oldest veteran has passed away
a son of Empire he hailed from Perth
now he rests in the good Aussie Earth

And when old soldiers pass his stone
remember that he is not now alone
Peter Casserly he has now gone home
he’s back with all of his mates again
young lads who died, as fighting men!

Lest we forget, less we forget, Amen
