BILL FISHER: THE OLD SOLDIER HAS GONE HOME

Old Bill was wounded in Action at the battle of Caen
he survived the Korean War’s battle of Kapyong
His boss in Korea was Colonel Big Jim Stone
they both lived together at the Old Soldiers’ Home

He proudly wore the US Presidential Citation
He and his buddies brought pride to the Canadian Nation
He was just a common old soldier and he never wanted rank!
Hellyer – made all men Corporals – Bill smilingly said no thanks!

He laughed when the rat sewed on his hooks
Wet canteen buddies, he laughed until he shook!
He and buddy – Rifleman Johnny Catell – you know him better as the Greek
MG and he, filled large packs with Beer and avoided the CQ for a week!

Our sharp CSM could control all his men, but Old Bill was a far different tale
He’d stare him down, he’d laugh and frown, and he ended up in jail
And a couple of times on CB and fines, I met MG on the square
And we did pack drill me and old Bill of Machine Gun fame and flair!

Old Bill is a hero to me and my friends he stayed until getting his pension
And not long ago at the Old Soldiers’ home, I saluted, he came to attention
that was goodbye to an old soldier guy whose life should get honourable mention!
MG’s now with God, and the Greek and the Rod, – In heaven there is no Detention!
