AN OLD SOLDIER’S THOUGHTS

Assault river crossings, collapsible boats
rubber knives, for cutting throats
hard training in the Regiment
where our unarmed combat youth was spent

Then there was travel overseas;
exotic places, if you please
Europe, England, the Middle East
and Cyprus too, to say the least

At seventeen, young soldier boys
singing songs of youth and joy
marching along carrying heavy packs
with rifles slung across our backs

We did the fire lanes of quick kill
real targets, the dead – they lay so still
when factions, they were killing each other
our thoughts turned home, to Dad and Mother
