Diane M. Weller: Memorial Day, 2006

MEMORIAL DAY, 2006

A war, 2001 began; Afghanistan, Bin Laden, and the Taliban
Attacked our World Trade Center Towers, our people, foreigners, everyone.
Retribution, we all agreed, against the perpetrators began.
Somewhere in all this melee and death
We turned right when we should have turned left.
We forgot who attacked us, the why and wherefores
And attacked the Iraqis, called it 'justified' and so much more.
For almost 5 years now the war rages onward
In Afghanistan, Iraq yet do we ever move forward?
Casualties mount in the numbers untold
As yet more and more deaths are daily unfolding;
Not only Americans but Coalition forces
As well as innocent civilians and the military resources.
9-11-2001 was a horrible day in our history
Already being remembered, not as it was but mistakenly.
Isn't it enough that all those lives were lost?
I wonder today just how high the cost?
Will all of this be in human life, military and innocent civilian?
When the monetary cost is already in the billions?
A Taliban-led attack on jet liners that were high jacked
Created a day in History when America was attacked.
The jet liners were rammed into buildings with horrific results
As the Taliban attempted to destroy the World's People through their assaults.
On every Memorial Day that we celebrate, past, present, future, not just today,
We MUST remember all who stood tall, who gave it their all to fight and who died;
To those who never came home, POW/MIA;
To the innocent killed, the soldier, the sailor, the marine, the airman, the civilian.
To those heroic people in the wrong place at the wrong time,
Who stood shoulder to shoulder in an attempt to save what is yours and mine.

AMERICA.
