Ah, Clausewitz. He knew society:
“War is politics by another means.”
But what is that abstract to you and I?
This: “I” took an oath to die for “your” politics
Whether I agreed with them or not,
Whether I wanted to go, or not. No matter.

Your politics…

Ah, Voltaire. He knew, yet even more:
“I may not agree with what you say, but
I’ll defend to the death your right to say it.”

So what is that stark reality to you and I?
This: The principle in that statement is worth,
Even more than those who went before me.

My oath…

Ah, the family. Get the dry cleaning before six,
Swing by for your kid’s Happy Meal,
And as the deaths on tonight’s NEWS
Drone on in the background of white noise –
As your family eats their dinner together,
Remember the reason for oaths and politics?

Our America…
