IT’S BEEN A YEAR
(An Imagined Set Of Personal Letters)

My darling Wife,

It’s been a long year, where’s everyone gone?
We’re missing our patriots and the work’s not done.
I’m sorry for what you’ve gone through
while I’ve been away,
but you know it’s not finished and I have to stay.
I swore an oath and took a stand,
and was sent to liberate a foreign land.
It isn’t because I don’t care, it’s because I do
I have to do my part to see freedom through.
I swear to you on my very life,
we’re making a difference in all this strife.
I can’t believe how much I truly miss you
I’d give anything I’ve got to be able to kiss you.

My honey,

The flag waving stopped, the banners came down
but you’re all still heroes in your own hometowns.
If it seems some doth protest too much,
it’s not all of you, it’s politics and such.
Don’t worry about anything I’ve been through,
just remember how very much we love you.
Be safe, be happy, be strong for us all,
in our son’s eyes, you’re ten feet tall.
I read him First Samuel about slaying the giant;
you’re all David to him, with Saddam more compliant.
We love you so much and are proud of you, too
and can’t begin to imagine all you’ve been through.
You keep that strong chin up and hurry on home,
it’s going to be quite awhile before we again let you roam.
