THE VETERAN
Framed in simple pine
His picture hung on the wall
Those who came to dine
Saw others in the hall
A wool uniform of olive drab
A campaign hat on his head
His medals on a wooden slab
Nailed to the wall above the bed
He was a kind and simple man
He fought in world war one
He knew all would understand
His silence when day was done
He worked hard all his life
He provided for his home
He cherished his kids and wife
He never wanted a life alone
When his life was over
And he was laid to rest
An American flag his cover
Proved he served with the best
