MEMORIES OF A VETERAN

Leather boots and cotton twill
Are the clothes I wear today
I once knew the solemn thrill
An army uniform could make

I was proud to wear the olive drab
Yellow stripes adorned my sleeve
Parachute wings and expert badge
And thirty days of hard earned leave

Now my hair is silver gray
My waist has doubled in size
There is no possible way
I could maintain the exercise

I own the memories I earned
Of war and peace and life
I am fortunate to have learned
The march of the drum and fife
