ARMY NURSE
She was an Army nurse
She cleaned up after war
On the outside she was terse
The best of the nursing corps
She was just a babe herself
Caring for the Army’s wounded young
During the day her work was wealth
At night her sad song was sung
No wounded soldier smelled her fear
She hid it with a smile
She dared not let a soldier near
She just talked with him awhile
Soldiers came and soldiers went
But she stayed where she was
Reading letters heaven sent
And donating blood at draws
Soldiers are often recognized
And thanked for their work
But the nurse is often patronized
And denied service perks
Nurses suffer in silence alone
Carrying the memory of wounded sons
Where is the gratitude shown?
For the Army Nurse in battles done
