Mike Subritzky

Sleeping fitfully
in airports and docks
around the world
or railway stations
or dimly lit bus terminals.
Always – hurry up and wait.

On yet another convoy
pulled to the side
of some long forgotten dusty road
somewhere, anywhere, everywhere.
Playing cards, brewing up
or writing home – while we wait.

Boredom relieves boredom
weapons are stripped, cleaned
checked, rechecked
oiled then reassembled.
Looking forward (always),
to the next rumour.

Like hunting dogs really
sleeping away the morning sunlight
dreaming on the next kill.
Forever in a state of spring-coiled readiness.
… Forever waiting.
