and avoidance.

resting there quietly
in the darkened corner of a
spare disused bedroom.

double locked and silent
a sleeping dragon of foreboding visions
containing sharp memories
and some nightmares.

badges bullets and medals
cards from bar girls
combat knife unit patches, and…
a photo album of that battalion
all of them long cold ambushed.

in another time and mindset
that old artillery trunk
was a prized possession
sacred to the memory
of distant exotic places…
and a life filled with adventure.
