THE IRON BIRDS OF AUSTRALIA

We have a wild and treacherous bird
and if it be so desired
it can ruin many lives by its deadly flames and fire

To the enemy it is known
in the greatest combats it has flown
its wings and flaps are made of steel
it twists and dives and roars and squeals

The mighty merlins are these birds
called Spitfires in other words

They were hatched by human hands
to protect and save our native land
they were not hatched to light on trees
they were hatched to light on Huns and Japanese

So let us thank designer Mitchell
for his patience and his brain
for there’s nothing saved our empire
but designer Mitchell’s planes
