SONG IN THE SANDS

IWVPA Double Tap Award for War Poetry: December 14, 2005
Awarded: December 14, 2005
Christmas in a foreign land
in a place of shifting sand…
Christmas night…
far from home
… the sky was black
and a lone star shone

A carol was hummed by one unknown,
and one by one… we began to sing:
then two by two and three by three
… the carol’s notes began to ring

‘Peace on Earth’…
I halting sang…
“good will toward man’…
all the while cradling tight
to the rifle in my hand.
Upon the cold desert air…
the carol rang

Just a fleeting thought then…
came into my mind
… if I
am to die here…
in the sand… for my beliefs
and you… my enemy…
are to die for thine…
Anything more… my mind
cannot perceive
only…
my answerless question…

Who would there be left…
then… to believe…?
