LONG TOM

Still told through the Cumberlands of Kentuck
in the famous Gap… there is a legend that says
there lies arustin’ somewhere… mighty ‘Long Tom’…
a giant cannon used in the Civil War
The Confederates ‘spiked’ him…
to render him useless… to fight no more
and then pushed him from a mountaintop
They say he has lain all these years… undiscovered
somewhere in these hills and hollars
in the shadows of Cumberland Mountain
what a thrill it would be
to stumble upon his resting place
Would I give out a rebel yell of discovery…
or would I retreat before this sleeping giant
… leaving him… to his mountain peace…
