Faye Sizemore

Faye Sizemore: Battle FlowerIn the midst of war a sunflower grows
fertilized with tears and soldiers’ souls

There it stands… as a prophet of old
brown centered with petals of gold

… near the clearing battle’s smoke…
surely a symbol of peace and hope…

Author’s Note: This poem was inspired by this photograph of a sunflower grown in Iraq from a seed that came from Kansas, USA sent by a Soldier in Iraq to Steve Brandenburg
