THE AFTERTHAW
… and thus, the stream’s thin, icy crust has been broken
and, flowing again, the stream is soft-spoken
as it bubbles and babbles and flows right along
singing the pebbly spring-melting song…
it carries small branches, thin leaves and twigs
and silvery sweet, it forwards berries and sprigs
Onward through winter, and into the Maw
of the great river’s waters, after the thaw.
