The Sudanese Tsunami
known as Darfur
is a tragic place
of haunted eyes,
an empty face
and not much hope
for life and love
and well-being
in the presence of
the absence of humanity
the absence of kindness
and empathy
the absence of a
heart that yearns
to beat free
to be free
to know freedom,
to know sympathy;
to raise a child
born of a father who
is known and loved,
not a Janjaweed
on a camel
striking from above;
to raise the crops
and tend the animals
and dance and sing
the village songs
would be enough
and it is what
each one longs
to do.
I ache for them.
Will you ache, too?
