LEST WE FORGET

“What do you think about Vietnam”, I asked.
“Well”, he said… “It’s kind of like religion –
there’s no perfect answer,
and besides, it was 30 years ago,
time to get over it.”

“How about the POW/MIA issue”, I asked.
He said, “They have to be dead –
their families need to get over it
and get on with their lives.”

I asked, “Well, how about the Holocaust.”
He said, “Of course, I feel sorry for the Jews…
but that’s been 50 years;
time to forget about it.”

Some time later, he asked:
“So, how do you feel about ‘us’?”
And I replied:
“I’m over it.”
