For the Crewchief and Dan

He does his job each day, with pride;
readies his “child” to fly away
hoping to see her reappear
at the end of another war-torn day.
Like the woman who’s left behind,
he hopes his loving care will find
his pride and joy back home again,
and not just her, but with her, men
whose lives depend upon
how he keeps his bird-child well.
He begins to scan the sky and frown
(a time of quiet hell)
until he sees a glimmer
and a shine from up above.

He lets his breath out slowly.
She is coming home,
and what he feels –
is Love.
