A VIEW FROM THE WINDOW

Michael Reams - My SonI have cooked,
cleaned,
prepared, and now
am waiting – pacing –
anticipating –
baked the brownies –
and am watching out the window
as every car goes past
anxious, ever anxious
for my guest to come at last.

When I feel that I
can’t stand the waiting
any more –
when I don’t want to just see
blooming cactus or the
oleander through the window
or through the open door –
a car pulls up and I am once more
filled with peace and
even glee…
for through the window I can see
My soldier son’s arrived
to visit me.
