Shirley P. Scott

She was seventeen when they met
and she had never been alone.
He was seventeen when they met
and he had always felt alone.

He was her shining knight,
she was his little princess.
The world was just right,
she filled up his emptiness.

Then the president sent the
young man to ‘Nam to defend it.
So his life was shattered,
it would be hard to mend it.

As hard as she might try,
she could not fill his emptiness.
He was alone again –
she was not a princess.

Will he ever come home again?
What can she do so he isn’t alone?
What can she say to bring him back?
Just where is it that he has gone?
