Dave Sabben
Dave Sabben was born in Suva, Fiji in 1945. He came to Australia in 1958 to attend Trinity Grammar School in Sydney as a boarder. He passed the Leaving Certificate in 1962 and entered the workforce.

Turning 20 in 1965, he was called up in the first intake of Australia’s National Service scheme. He applied for officer training and completed the first course of the Scheyville National Service Officer Training Unit (1OTU), graduating in December, 1965.

In January 1966 he was posted to 6RAR at Enoggera in Brisbane and was appointed platoon commander of 12 Platoon, Delta Company. The battalion was warned for service in Vietnam in April 1966, arriving in the war zone in June 1966.

In June 1966, Dave was the platoon commander of 12 Platoon, Delta Company, and 6 RAR (Royal Australian Regiment). In August 1966, Dave and his platoon were part of what is probably Australia’s most heroic action at the Battle of Long Tan.
