William D. Royser: Saipan - 1943
William Royster is a member of Aviation Poetry’s Hall of Fame. He served with the 20th Air Force, 499th Bomb Group, 879th Bomb Squad, and Flew 31 Combat Missions over Japan during WWII, as a B29 Tail Gunner. His poem, Flak Ally was admitted into the World Hall of Fame in 1978, although none of his poems have been published.

W. D. Royster is said to be a humble man and an accomplished poet and writer. He is also a bona fide American hero. He flew 31 combat missions in B-29 bombers while serving in the 20th AF, during WW II and was wounded while in perilous aerial combat with the Japanese. He received a chest full of medals and ribbons in recognition of his valor and devotion to duty along with the other members of his flight crew. Among the decorations that characterized his heroism were the Distinguished Flying Cross and Purple Heart.
