THE HELMSMAN

The storm had torn the anchors free
The mast began to fall
He stood there at the rudder
Where he’d always faced it all

The waves kept growing stronger
With his ship in disarray
But he stood fast there at the wheel
For he would not give way

Now he would not surrender,
Now he would not retreat
And death had met a helmsman now
That fear could not defeat
