I grew up dirt poor as a kid
But never had a clue
How tough it was for mom and dad
And what they both went through

When I was very young
I never thought of having more
I simply did not realize
That we were very poor

I always had clean clothes to wear
Though patches were the rule
And as I grew I got to wear
My brothers clothes to school

I’m glad that was the way of it
We learned what love can bring
For we had all we needed
And we treasured everything
