SURVIVOR
What do the words mean anymore
What is there left of me
Just heard another brother died
So very suddenly
Why must it be I still go on
Why am I left alive
When will my turn come next
I do not care if I survive
Too many now have fallen
Too many much too fast
Though it’s a battle all must lose
Don’t wish to be the last
This day is much too heavy
And my eyes are growing wet
I’ve lost another friend today
My heart will not forget

Author’s Note: Came home today from the heart doctor and found a message from a dear friend, Gary Riley’s, son. Gary of Boise Idaho had, while in New Mexico for a business meeting, journeyed to my town just to shake my hand for the books I’d sent him. He died today suddenly. Gary was whom I was visiting when my home burned down, and stood beside me as I watched it consumed. A special human being, Vietnam Vet, a brother and, yes, also family to me – I am at a loss for words, but this came to mind… forgive my heart this night… Take care Gary: see you on the other side.
