M. Kathleen Richards
Kathleen is the mother of two grown children and two beautiful grandchildren. She and her youngest brother are legally blind; they both have a disease of the retina known as Retinitis Pigmentosa, which is hereditary, and at this time Kathleen retains only 3% of her vision.
As the daughter and granddaughter of military men and the sister of a Canadian Service woman, Kathleen has a distinguished legacy through these people. Her sister, who was a year younger than Kathleen and who was in the Canadian Navy – peacetime, passed away in December 2002 from complications arising from Breast Cancer. We were a family of 6 (parents and 4 children) who are now only 5.
Currently serving on the Halton Hills Accessibility Advisory Committee, (which has a mandate is to secure total accessibility for people with disabilities), Kathleen also serves on the Board of Directors with the Income Security Advocacy Center in Toronto, Ontario Canada.
Very active in advocacy work in her peer community of blind and visually impaired Canadians, as well as the DisAbled Women’s Network of Canada and Ontario, she is the Past 2nd Vice President of the Canadian Council of the Blind, BC/Yukon Division, Past President with the White Cane Chapter of Penticton, BC, Canada and Past President of Theta Chapter, Beta Sigma Phi, Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
