My youngest sister Joyce's father-in-law passed away and the funeral was Wednesday November 26, the day before Thanksgiving. I wrote the following poem in honor of Joe's life and to commemorate his passing.
JOE
Silence filled the air
As we stood in solemn thought
The flag was folded, given to the son
For freedoms that were not bought.
This gentle giant of a man
I knew for most my life
Passed from this world into the next
This Thanksgiving he joins his wife.
You think you know a person
But it was not until that day
A Bronze Star for meritorious action
Upon his body lay.
He served his country well I'm told
I never heard the story
Somewhere off in the Pacific
He fought with might and glory.
How many others have left this world
Brave men until the end
I wish I would have been able to say
Thank you again, my friend.
I dreamed of my own father that night
It has been so many years
He felt so real to me again
I awoke amid my tears.
