FOR THE CHILDREN

The sweet innocence of the children
Big dark eyes and beguiling grins
Curious and anxious about the Americans
They want to touch their hearts and hands.

Just what do these children know about war
Their daily lives are consumed for sure
Perhaps it's all they have ever known
Living their childhood in a conflict zone.

Soldiers offer kindness and smiles
Children giggle and forget their trials
Toys and candy and school supplies
Listen to their delighted cries.

To live in a country that is at peace
Should be every child's right at least
Then the lamb and the lion
And all creatures of God
In harmony will be
To a world that is free.
