Al lives in Logan, Alabama. He is sixty years old [ed. as at May 2007] and retired from just over thirty years combined service in the Army and National Guard. He is also retired from the Department of Defense with twenty-seven years service.
After retiring from both in 1999, Al “went totally insane” and bought an eighteen-wheeler with plans to take Nancy, his wife, on the road and get paid well for traveling. As it turned out, Nancy was unable to accompany him and by the middle of 2003 his knees and back “went out” about the same time. In the hope that after “a couple of operations” he could get back to driving, Al held onto the truck till last year when he finally sold it.
Al’s military time consisted of a little over four years in the regular Army – from Jan ‘65 to June ‘69. The remainder of his service included two years Florida National Guard and the rest in the Alabama National Guard.
During his first tour of Vietnam, Al was based in Qui Nhon Area Support Command Transportation as a five-ton tractor-trailer driver. His Second tour (‘68 to ‘69) was as a gun-trucker with Co. A 70th Engineer Bn., 18th Bde
