DREAM
He stands alone, and shining,
Flags and causes draped about him,
Like the togas of ancient Rome.
The very last of a long, long line,
David, Hercules, and Alexander’s troop,
Soldiers for the right as they knew it.
There are Legionnaires and Macabees,
Greek and Trojan, men of Charlemagne
and Napoleon, Colonizers and Pacifiers.
Revolutionary, Redcoat, Reb and Yankee,
Modern Warriors, men of our “World” Wars,
of Police Actions, and Vietnams…
and now of Terror.
History proceeds to this lonely one,
a Lone Struggler, off in the far, dim future,
Somewhere in a World finally at Peace.
One day pray, he may come to us,
The Ultimate Hero, this one and no more,
The last of all those gone before…
The Very Last Soldier
Hand Salute!
