LEGACY

I do not know the age
of the boy I held in death
I don’t know where he came from
I don’t know where he went
I never knew his first name
Hell! I didn’t know his last
All I know is that I wept
As from this life he passed.

I do not know the dreams
of the boy whose hand I held
I don’t know if he had a girl
Or had a wife and kids
I never knew of his kin
Hell! I knew him not at all
All I know is that I wept
As he, to death, was called.

I don’t know what would be
if that boy had not been killed
He could have been a father,
Doctor, poet… anything
Hell! It doesn’t matter now
He’s already left his mark.
I remember that I wept;
His memory lights the dark.
