ON A GOOD DAY YOU CAN SEE VIETNAM

“It’s a good day to be flying”,
Butler says, as their helicopter
swoops slowly over an Iraq village lying
below them, to drop candy and toys
for the children… the way they did
in Vietnam, when they were still boys.

Marshlands by the Tigris River grow,
rise up to greet them, as their veteran eyes
resurrect the Mekong Delta gaining below,
buried deep just wars ago, the tragedies denying,
seen below… clutched in tiny, dirt-streaked hands
gratefully waving… on a good day to be flying.
