I lay aside my woes today
while strolling with my god;
for once, I mused on others
and fields their souls have plod.

I slipped into their holey boots
to glean the pain they felt
from blisters they obtained
from all that war has dealt.

I agonized, I prayed, I cried
this once not over me,
then stood and wiped my eyes,
two gifts… that I might see.

I stepped away a wiser fool
for having took the time
to bend and kiss the poppies
in Flanders, moving rhyme.
