FOR COUNTRY, HOME AND GOD, RESPECTIVELY

I am one who’d rather kill
than turn the other cheek,
afraid to do my Father’s will,
in fear I will seem weak.
Oh, Dear God, am I so proud
that countless lives I’d take;
so wooed, a cheering crowd
will put more souls at stake?
What kind of patriot am I
if I do not heed thy laws
and love a world that rallies me
to kill for their applause?
Once their bidding I have done
and I’ve slogged home heart-in-hand,
please help me, God, to turn my cheek
when no one understands.
