Nancy L. Meek

Nightmares are reality
endured inside our brain,
viewed with inner eyes
designed for such terrain,
where nothing is impossible
except the task at hand,
and that is: to escape
what we can’t understand.
Some dream in living color;
some dream in black and white
or various shades of gray,
or whatever hue seems right;
as scenes unfold before us
that we cannot control,
or at least we think we can’t,
as we struggle through our role.
Our mind is truly awesome
in how it can display
our traumas on a palette
in such a vivid way
that all we see seems real
and all we feel seems true
till we bolt upright in bed
or a foxhole-with-a-view.
