A MOTHER NEVER FORGETS

Awarded: September 13, 2002The drums of war come pounding
A thundering ghostly refrain
Echoes of the past resounding
As the mourning sun rises again
Another mother, filled with loss
Buries her child ‘neath the green
Among brothers, a clean white cross
Marks his spot in the hallowed scene
The bugle wails a final goodbye
To her son come home from war
To join the others side-by-side
To hear the drums no more
His momma cries, as mothers do
Clutching the flag to her breast
The cannon roars, piercing the blue
A salute for her boy laid to rest
Each year, she’ll bring a fresh rose
Place it, with love, on the plot
Hoping his spirit somehow knows
Though some may forget, she will not
