MIDNIGHT UGLY

In the midnight ugly
a can’t sleep night
and word being awkward
full stop the road block of any idea at all

the news being the way it is
all bad with only the banal ads
Masquerading as the good news
and feckless Xmas music stinking up the sound track

perhaps that late night coffee
will assuage this dull headache
because now the sirens and Miles trumpet
only annoy

and the words are lost in the two o’clock
fog
why struggle on, the muse is gone
like all those times she was unhappy

and now in her grave
can only look in disapproval
as if all her smiles
were spent

and I ponder my brutal portrait
and wonder where it has all gone
and the background noise
grinds on and on

it started nowhere
and ended in the same place
and the only thing that changed
were the wrinkles on my face
