The peanut butter cookies
are bullet proof this morning.
I have my headphones
on today
which is not the iPod way.
The ear buds annoy
because they fall out
and leave you dangling
only hearing one side
a sort of useless toy.

My mind is wandering
especially this morning
when I awoke at four a.m.
and couldn’t get back to sleep again.
So I wrote the eternal question,
“Why?”
which will never be answered
perhaps until I die.

Then I returned to bed
and had semi erotic dreams
about women I haven’t seen in years
then got up again and shaved
and surfed the internet for awhile
then went out for my coffee in style.

Robert Johnson on the iPod
dead these seventy five years.
The years have slipped away
like thieves in the night
and many of those who started
this journey with me
are markers in the graveyard
of my mind.

The musicians can have a seat
in the present
while the others
only live in the infamy
of memory.
Artists never brought to mind
even when their work
is viewed in kind.
We all have our stories to tell
our bits of heaven
the realities of hell
but it matters little
where we are lead
because in the future
we will all be
a long time dead.
