THEY AIN’T GONNA JUMP NO MORE

The incoming mail
lands like a hail
of
an incoming artillery shell.
Yet more jumpers
have taken the fall
and won’t answer
the old roll call.
Time is a friend to no one
not something you can
threaten or stop
with a Tommy gun.
I check the ranks
left and right
as old friends
steal softly into the night.
There is only the last
inquiry
listed in a one paragraph
obituary.
The question that comes to mind:
will our obits be as kind?
Will the stories of the mud
and the blood
and the punch ups
of another time
be buried
in the sands of time?
Will anyone dare to say
they did this and that
on the last day
when winds of fate took
these jumpers away?
These boots, berets, belts and the colors remain
to adorn the coffins
then into a box on memories transfixed
in the aircraft door
because these men,
these jumpers
will not stand up and hook up
and stand to the door
‘cause
they ain’t gonna jump no more.
