the white noise
of a radio
and iTunes
on at the same time

surfing the internet
for factoids to support
an argument
no one can win

war, what is it good for
is it only for the benefit
of those who would profitably
waste someone else’s lives

they have faces
those amongst the fallen
they have families
they have a nation of brothers and sisters

we honour them with parades
and vigils
but never question the wars
that killed them

the reasons are hidden
beneath the roar of pseudo patriotic rhetoric
and the almost meaningless words
like freedom, democracy and liberty

my old dad
always said in any political argument
the key question is
who get paid

their faces, swim in my nightmares
and Kipling’s lament for his son John
if any question why we died
it was because our fathers lied

I have no overpass to stand on
to salute their bodies coming home
I only have this silly little screen
and my tears.
