I went to the protest
but I only went to see
if my image bright and shiny
would show up on prime time TV.

I didn’t know about the cause
I didn’t know the why,
in fact all the things I didn’t know
were enough to make you cry.

Cheap hotels are being torn down
and there is porn and Nazis on the internet
forests are burning everywhere
and we all want a free Tibet.

So pick your cause carefully
and make a sign you think they will see
and have your microsecond of fame
and see your image on prime time TV.

I hope your message is important
something to make a talking head glad
something loud and showy
just before the Nike ad.

Forget the course of history
forget the victim’s face
take it all out of context
and put a running shoe in its place.

Che has been dead for thirty years
revolution from the barrel of a gun;
dead bodies awash in a sea of tears
and our utopia still not won.

So march for others human rights
and lay down in front of the tanks
summit yourself for abuse and torture
but don’t expect any thanks.

But we can’t just sit on our hands
and something has to be done
or we will all be dead and gone
and our causes still not won.

I went to the protest the other day
that the media deemed shallow and harebrained
just the thing to fit between the ads
so morons can be entertained.

I really like to stay and rap about the cause
but I really have to flee
‘cause I went to the protest the other night
and my image is on prime time TV.
